Garden City wins dual with Scott City
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night saw two schools 35 miles apart battle in a dual, as Garden City made the trip to Scott City to face the Beavers. All three sets would be competitive, as the Lady Buffaloes would get a three-set sweep in a 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 victory.
The first two sets were fairly similar, seeing Scott City jump out to early leads in each of them. Scott City would lead 9-4 and 10-7, when the Lady Buffaloes used a big rally with a 12-1 run to lead 19-11. The Lady Beavers scored the next five points to pull to within 19-16, but Garden City would be too much, taking the opening set 25-19.
In the second set, it was Scott City who led by a small margin, but were never able to build upon their lead. Trailing 11-10, the Lady Buffs responded with six straight to lead 16-11. The Lady Beavers would get to within 19-16, and for a second straight set, Garden City closed the set on a 6-3 run to win 25-19.
The third set saw three lead changes, with the last belonging to the Lady Buffaloes. Scott City led 9-8, when a Garden City string of seven straight pushed them to a 15-9 lead midway in the third set. The Lady Beavers would cut it to 20-19. A Lady Buff timeout proved to be big, as they closed the set and match with five of the last seven points in a 25-21 win.
Garden City was paced at the net by Piper Harris with 13 kills, and Charly Vollertson added 10 kills. Aleeya Crus had four service aces. Scott City got eight kills from Peyton Gentry and five from Piper Fox. Kendall Gentry had three service aces.
Garden City improves to 10-6 on the year, as they will take their six-match win streak to Wichita Heights on Thursday. Scott City saw their six-match win streak snapped and fell to 9-7 on the year. They will host a GWAC triangular with Cimarron and Holcomb on Thursday.
