Garden City and McCook Split Doubleheader to Begin Baseball Season

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The Garden City Community College baseball team started the 2014 season at home and split a double-header with McCook. Busters scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the 1st game 6-3. Buster shortstop Tyler Alitz and second baseman Zach Barton each knocked in two runs. Alitz had a two run double in the win. Dalton Shalberg won the game going five innings and allowed just two runs, striking out seven. The second game was also supposed to go seven, but it lasted 10 with McCook pulling out a 3-2 win.

GCCC pitcher Josh Thomas struggled walking one and allowing two hits to load the bases before Casey Philpot walked with the bases loaded to break a 1-1 tie and Ethan Freeman added a Sac-Fly. Garden City scored a run in the bottom of the 10th. Francisco Alvarez started the inning off with a double. Eventually with two on and one out Kaleb Zimmer bunted in a run. The Buster left the potential tying run at second to end the game.

After the game Garden City Coach Chris Finnegan was happy that his team played this hard to begin the season.

Garden City welcomes in Indian Hills (IA) for a 4 game weekend series beginning Friday afternoon. 1st pitch is at 5pm.
