Garden City accepting applications for Community and Art Grant programs

GARDEN CITY – The City of Garden City is now accepting applications for its Community Grant and Art Grant programs as well as applications for the Alcohol Fund Advisory Committee’s (AFAC) use of Alcohol Tax Funds Program.

The State of Kansas provides to cities and counties receipts generated from a special tax on liquor sales. A third of these receipts can be used for general government purposes, a third can be credited to parks and recreation and a third is devoted to alcohol and drug treatment or prevention. To manage the portion of the funds devoted to alcohol and drug treatment or prevention, the City of Garden City and Finney County empower an Alcohol Fund Advisory Committee (AFAC) to solicit applications and make recommendations for use of the local funds. AFAC distributes these funds in a manner that enables the group to monitor effectiveness. Applicants are expected to provide a strategic description of how requested funds will be used and provide documentation throughout the year as to success in fulfilling their commitment.

The Committee gives particular consideration to applications which propose to make a difference in the following categories: Treatment, Problem Identification and Referral; Alternatives and Activities; Community-Based Change Efforts; Environmental Approaches; Prevention Education and Information Dissemination.

The Community Grant program is designed to systematically award funds to persons or organizations that undertake projects or begin programs that benefit the entire community or significantly benefit a targeted segment of the population. The Community Grant is intended to award money for projects or programs that would not customarily be funded through the annual City Budget, but serve to meet the identified goals and objectives of the City.
Any person, civic group, not-for-profit agency, or private entity will be considered for receiving funds, except for those that would qualify for the AFAC funds, Arts Grant funds, and those applicants that have the ability to levy funds.

The Art Grant program is designed to award funds to persons or organizations that undertake art projects or begin art programs that benefit the community. The Art Grant was established by the Garden City Commission in 2012. Any person, civic group, not-for-profit agency, or private entity will be considered for receiving funds, except for those that would qualify for AFAC funds, those that receive Community Grant funds, and those applicants that have the ability to levy funds.

For additional information on any of these programs, or for applications, visit the City’s website, www.garden-city.org. Applications will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. on February 9, 2018. Please mail or hand-deliver applications to  Assistant City Manager Jennifer Cunningham, 301 N. 8th, Garden City, KS 67846.  If you have any additional questions please contact Cunningham at 620-276-1160.
