From within; Scott City names Turner as Head Football Coach
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The run for Scott City Football has been one of the best. Over the last 29 years, the Beavers have not had a losing season, which includes four state championships and two runner-up finishes at state in that time frame. In the last 21 years, there has been one assistant who has been a fixture in the Scott City tradition.
As the saying goes “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it”. Scott City is going with that saying, promoting from within the system, as Turner has been named the 23rd coach in Scott City’s history.
The Arkansas City native planned on playing at his hometown Cowley County Community College, but after the program was dropped, he made his way westward to Garden City Community College. After his time in Garden City, he walked on at Oklahoma State for year and then finished his playing days at Southwestern College in Winfield.
His first coaching experience was a rule 10 coach at a middle school in Arkansas City, Turner was an assistant at St. John for five years.
Turner will continue to serve as the defensive coordinator for the Beavers, who have been stout on that side of the ball since taking over in 2007. As for the remainder of the coaching staff, Brian Gentry, who has been on staff since 2012, will run the offense, seven-year assistant Landon Frank will continue to be the linebackers coach, and Todd Richardson will continue his role as an assistant. Two spots remain open on the coaching staff.
He takes over the top spot for Glenn O’Neil, who accepted the Topeka-Seaman head football job. O’Neil was 97-14 in nine seasons as the Beaver head coach. Both were on the coaching staff for 20 seasons. Turner is also the head track coach, and an assistant on the girls basketball team.
