Fowler Boys Remain Unbeaten; Dighton Comeback Attempt Falls Short
Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Fowler Bulldogs remained undefeated, as they eventually pulled away from the Cunninham Wildcats in the opening round of the Class 1A, Division II Tournament Thursday in Hays 67-50. Things weren’t so fortunate for Dighton, as they were playing catch-up from the very beginning, and fell to the White City Huskies in the final game of the day 48-39.
After leading after the first period 12-9, Fowler would eventually grow their lead after the end of each quarter. The Goldbugs led Cunningham 28-22 at the break, and 49-36 after three, and eventually took out the Wildcats by a 17-point margin 67-50. Fowler shot 12-13 from the foul line in the victory, and advanced on to the semi-finals Friday afternoon. The Goldbugs (24-0) got 22 points from Taylin Bird and 15 from Ty Clark. Cunningham (15-9) had Cody Huhman with 14 points and Nicholas Huhman with 11. Fowler will face Wallace County, who defeated Crest 72-62, and impr0ved to 19-5.
In the finale of the day, Dighton fell behind early, and almost pulled off a comeback victory. The Hornets trailed White City 16-7 after the opening quarter and 25-13 at the break. In the third period, Dighton would pour in 21 points to pull to within 36-34 heading into the final period. The Huskies would pull away as the Hornets would run out of steam, as Dighton scored only five points in the final eight minutes. Leading a balanced attack for White City (20-3) were Sam Morgan, Jaren Nittler and Dustin Ash with 12 points. For the Hornets (16-8), they were led by Matthew Mullville with 15 points. White City will take on Axtell, who upset Central Christian out of Hutchinson 63-58.
