Former Buster RB honored by Big 12

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-When Tyreek Hill was a senior at Coffee High School in Douglass, GA., there wasn’t much media attention. After all, who is going to shine the spotlight on a kid that no one had ever heard of. 

Fast forward nearly three years and you’d be in the minority if you don’t know the name. After two stellar years at Garden City Community College, Hill took his talents to Stillwater, where on Wednesday, he was named preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. 

Last season, the speedy running back totaled nearly 700 yards on 101 carries. But that doesn’t quite tell the entire story. As soon as he left for his new college town, Hill immediately made an impact on a different playing surface: the track. 

He took the indoor track world by storm-winning the 200 meters and placing second in the 60 at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships-helping the OSU to its first conference men’s title. Hill finished fifth in the 200 at the NCAA Indoor Championships claiming All-American status after just two months on campus. 

Of course success on the track is nothing new for Hill-who before making the trek to Garden City, he was setting world records at the junior world championships in Barcelona. 

The next challenge for Hill: finding a role in Mike Gundy’s spread offense. But don’t worry, the former Cowboys quarterback could have a field day plugging in a guy that’s considered one of the best hybrid offensive players in the country.
