Foes renew series tonight in Scott City
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Three of the four teams who will take the court tonight at Scott Community High School are ranked in the top five in their classification, as Scott City and Holcomb renew their rivalry in a Great West Activities Conference doubleheader.
In the girls game, Holcomb enters tonight with a 7-0 record overall, and is 2-0 in conference play, after their thrashing of Colby on Friday night 60-24. The Lady Longhorns have been led by a trio through their first seven games, as the lone senior, Haley Heydman, is averaging 21 points per game for the No. 3 ranked team in Class 3A. Scott City has dropped two straight, and are now 1-4 overall, 0-2 in GWAC play, after their tough defeat to Hugoton Friday night 64-37. Foul trouble has plagued the Lady Beavers in the last two games, with a minimum two starters picking up at least three fouls in the first half. Bailey Nickel continues to lead the Scott City squad with 19 points and eight boards a game.
The second game of the doubleheader is a battle of 2-0 teams in the GWAC. Holcomb enters the game with a 6-1 record, and a No. 5 ranking in Class 3A. The Longhorns have won five straight, after defeating Colby Friday night at the Colby Community Building 62-25. They have two players averaging at double figures, as Heath Tucker leads the team with 18.6 points a game to go along with 5.1 assists. Scott City used a 34-6 third quarter run to pound Hugoton 72-45 on Friday night. The Beavers enter tonight’s game as the No. 2 ranked team in Class 4A, Division II, and have won four straight games. Trey O’Neil leads the Beavers in scoring with over 25 points per game, and also leads the team in assists with nearly four a game. Both Scott City and Holcomb lost to Pueblo East in the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic in December.
