FFA Scholarships Awarded to Local Students

(westernkansasnews.com) The National FFA Foundation awarded scholarships to members across the state of Kansas. FFA members were recognized for scholarship awards at the 89th Kansas FFA State Convention May 31-June 2 at Kansas State.

The National Foundation offers $2 million to FFA members across the nation every year. The scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000.

A couple of local students received scholarships this year Brianne Nelsen from Garden City and Garrett Girk from Syracuse.

15 students from the Southwest District FFA were awarded their State FFA Degrees. The state degree is the highest honor the Kansas FFA can award its members.

In order to achieve the award, members must meet the following requirements: have received their Chapter FFA Degree, been an FFA member and agricultural education student for at least two years, earned at least $2,000 or worked 600 hours in their Supervised Agricultural Experience program, given a six-minute speech about agriculture or FFA, participated in eight different leadership activities, received a “C” average or better in high school and shown a record of outstanding leadership and community involvement.

The members of the Southwest District to receive the honor are:

Garden City- Tyler Cloud, Karl Larson, Micaila Lock, Cameron Skipper-Dumler

Dodge City- Laramie Yoder

Hodgeman County- Sara D. Wasko

Hugoton- Lacey Brecheisen, Romano Burger, Kyra Kalani, Roman Lindstrom, Bernabe Mendoza, Elias Mendoza, Brooklynn Trotter

South Central- Jordan Beeley

SW Heights- Brittany Walker
