Final Highlights:

Newton, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Garden City Coach David Upton is not a big fan of overtime. But his team’s play in the four-minute extra session on Friday afternoon might have been just what the doctor ordered.

Jaymie Bernbeck scored a game-high 20 points, and Taryn Tempel notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds-she scored eight in the extra frame-as the Buffs held off No. 9 Olathe Northwest 66-56 in the consolation semifinals of the 38th annual Newton Invitational at Railroader Field House.

“Apparently the girls needed more scrimmage time,” Upton said after the game. “So we played an extra four minutes. But I’m really proud of how they finished.”

The Buffs had a six-point lead midway through the second half, but the Lady Ravens (6-6) kept hanging around and eventually tied it on Shea Shipman’s offensive-rebound put back following Hannah Rennell’s miss.

The clubs then played to a stalemate over the next minute before Olathe Northwest had a chance to win the game with under 10 seconds remaining. Head Coach Joel Branstrom decided to put the ball in the hands of Shaleia Jamison, but the senior missed an open layup. Bernbeck grabbed the rebound and Upton screamed for a timeout.

With under five seconds to play, Garden City (9-4, 3-1) found Berbeck on the inbounds, but the junior’s shot from the right wing went wide left, and the game headed to overtime.

In the extra session, the Buffs found themselves down for the first time in the second half when Annmarie Boeh hit a runner in the lane. It didn’t take long for Garden City to respond as moments later-Tempel buried a three from the right wing to give the Buffs a 56-54 edge with 1:38 to play in overtime. The defense did the rest.

Garden City closed the game on a 13-2 run, and the Lady Ravens could only watch as Berbeck salted the game away at the line. The Junior finished 6-of-8 from the stripe.

Shipman led Olathe Northwest with 13 points but was just 5-for-20 from the floor. Meantime Garden City finished the night at 47 percent from the field-their best shooting game of the season.

Breece Dreiling added 8 points and five rebounds before fouling out. Jacksenie Torneo and Tionna McKee eache chipped in seven.
