Error-plagued Beavers drop two in Liberal

Liberal, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a windy Tuesday afternoon in Liberal, Scott City was playing on the road for the third straight doubleheader, facing a young, but talented Redskin squad. Errors proved costly in both games, as Liberal defeated the Beavers 15-1, called in the fifth inning in the first game and collected an 8-0 win in the second game.

Scott City had a tough day all around in both hitting and fielding. After being retired in order in the first, the Beavers committed three first inning errors, allowing Liberal to score six runs on only one hit. The second inning seemed to follow suit, as the Redskins sent 13 to bat, and scored six more runs on three hits as Scott City committed three more errors. For the game, the Beavers committed nine errors. Liberal extended their lead to 13-0 after three innings, before Scott City was able to get their first run. In the top of the fourth, Sloan Baker became the Beavers’ first base runner of the game with a lead-off single, and Hunter Braun doubled to drive Baker in in the next at bat. The Redskins plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, and Scott City was retired in order in the top of the fifth to make the final 15-1. Keigun Wells took the loss, giving up 12 runs on just three hits in an inning and two-thirds pitched. Baker and Braun collected the lone hits for the Beavers. Collin Ware gave up a run on two hits and struck out four in five hits for the complete game win. 

It seemed as though Scott City settled down in the second game. Unfortunately for the Beavers, the bats had a hard time coming to life. Liberal’s Jared Hasik was dominant on the mound, striking out the side in the first, third and fourth innings, and ended up with 15 strikeouts in the game. The Redskins scored two in the first, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth inning. Keigun Wells had Scott City’s first hit of the game on a two-out double in the fourth inning. The Beavers had their chances to score, but were unable to get a timely hit. Justin Faurot led off the fifth with a double, but was stranded, and Reid Flower had a one-out single in the seventh, and was stranded at third. Gustavo Gonzales gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched, on four hits, and took the loss. Hasik picked up the win for Liberal. 

Scott City drops to 0-8 on the season, and will travel to Great Bend to face the Panthers and TMP-Marian on Tuesday, while Liberal improved to 6-4, and will host Guymon on Monday
