Ellis picks up two wins against Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday’s doubleheader for Scott City would be their stiffest competition of the year. Ellis entered at 10-0 on the year, and have not really been tested. The Railroaders would derail Scott City’s senior day, as they would come up with a pair of road wins at 13-1, and 12-8.

Ellis would put the pressure early on and never looked back. After they led 2-0 after the first inning, the Railroaders would tack on three runs in the third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth before Scott City got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Tegan Cain would drive the first three runs in for Ellis, with an RBI groundout in the first and had a two-run single in the third inning. He would score on a fielders choice to push the lead to 4-0. They doubled their run total in the fourth with a pair of two-run doubles by Tyson Jimenez and Easton Burton. Jimenez added another two-run double in the fifth inning, and Cain cleared the bases with a three-run triple to push their lead to 13-0. The Beavers got their lone run in the bottom of the fifth on an Easton Lorg infield single that scored Ryan Cure.

Out of the 15 outs, Tegan Cain recorded 12 strikeouts on the mound to pick up the win, giving up a run on four hits. He also had two hits and drove in six runs. Tyson Jimenez had three hits and drove in four runs, and Easton Burton had three hits with two RBI. Harrison King took the loss, going three-plus innings, giving up six runs on five hits and had five strikeouts. Jeffery Nix gave up seven runs, six earned, on five hits in two innings of work. Easton Lorg had a hit and an RBI for Scott City.

The finale of the day would be more competitive than the first. Ellis jumped out early with three runs in the top of the first, capped off by a George Crawford two-run double to put them up 3-0 in the top of the first. Scott City was able to tie the game in the bottom of the first, as Harrison King used a two-run double to drive in Easton Lorg and Brady Welker. King would tie the game, as he scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-3 after an inning of play. In the second inning, the Railroaders took the lead on a Tyson Jimenez RBI triple, and on the very next pitch, Konnor Pfeifer would drill a two-run home run to left field to give them a 6-3 lead. A Crawford RBI single pushed their lead to 7-3. The Beavers pulled to within 7-4 in the third on an Ellis error, and got to within two runs in the fifth at 7-5 on a balk call that scored Lorg. Ellis took advantage of a costly error in the top of the fifth, as they plated three runs, thanks to a Jimenez two-run triple and a Pfeifer RBI single. Scott City rallied late, as Lawson Bailey drilled a home run to left center field in the bottom of the fifth, and would tack on two more in the sixth to pull to within 10-8 as Brady Welker’s RBI ground rule double scored Lorg, and JP Harris RBI double brought home Welker. The Railroaders took advantage of back to back errors in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs with the bases loaded to make the score 12-8, which would be the final.

Tyson Jimenez went five innings for the win, giving up six runs, five earned, on five hits, with 10 strikeouts. He also went 3-5 at the plate with three RBI. Konnof Pfeifer and George Crawford drove in three runs for the Railroaders. Tegan Cain stuck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save. Scott City’s Easton Lorg went 4 2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs, five earned, on 12 hits, with six strikeouts. Brady Welker went the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits. Harrison King drove in two runs, and Lorg, Harris and Lawson Bailey each had two hits for the Beavers. They committed five errors in game two.

Scott City drops to 13-3 on the year, and will play at Hugoton Saturday, May 8, and wrap up the regular season at Syracuse on Tuesday, May 11. Ellis is 12-0 on the season, as they play at Ellinwood on Monday.
