Donnis Jean Schmitt
Donnis Jean Schmitt, 85, died October 3, 2016 at the Wichita Presbyterian Manor in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on August 23, 1931 at Carmen, Oklahoma the daughter of Roy and Esther (Sanders) Stebens.
She graduated from Carmen High School; Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva, Oklahoma; and the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. She taught school for 34 years before retiring. On April 13, 1952 she married Robert L. Schmitt, he preceded her in death on December 2, 2002. She was one of the organizers of the Women’s Division of the National Junior College Athletic Association, and coached women’s sports for several years. She was inducted into the Dodge City Community College Hall of Fame in 1992.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dodge City, the Builders Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, Western Plains Medical Complex Auxiliary, Depot Theater Guild, Dodge City Community College Endowment Board. She served as a Stephen Minister of the Methodist Church.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Carolyn and Paul Williams, Marilyn and Jim Jordan and Wayne and Ronnie Schulte.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Friday October 7, 2016 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Jerre Nolte presiding. Burial will be at 2:30 PM Friday October 7, 2016 at the Carmen Cemetery in Carmen, Oklahoma . Visitation will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
