Donald Eugene Gregg
Donald Eugene Gregg died, February 17, 2017 at Wichita, KS. Don was born April 6, 1930 at Hutchinson, Kansas the son of Oliver and Jeanne (Corey) Gregg.
He attended school in Hutchinson. As a young boy, he was active with the Boy Scouts and learned to hunt and fish at an early age. Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952. He was stationed in San Diego, California during the Korean conflict. His assignment was aboard the USS Thomas Jefferson-LST 279 where he was a signalman. The LST would pass through the Panama Canal and later be stationed near Haiti. Don was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 58 and Howard Gotschall Post #1714, VFW.
On May 22,1954, Don married Betty Mathis at Hutchinson. They moved to Dodge City in February 1956 making their home there for over 60 years. Together they had 4 children, Gay, Beth, Jan and Gil.
Don worked as Meteorologist for the National Weather Service for 33 years. He was a past member of The Optimist Club, active Rotary Club member and was a Paul Harris Fellow serving a the president of The Dodge City Rotary Club from 2007-2008. Don was also a member of The United Methodist Church, Dodge City. He enjoyed multiple Canadian fishing adventures and four cruise holidays which reconfirmed his love of the sea.
Don is survived by two daughters, Gay (Dennis Hughes) of Goddard, and Jan (Tom Goodwin) of Cleveland, Tennessee; grandchildren, Matt Huston (Tanya) of Aurora Colorado, Zach Edwards of Cleveland, Tennessee, Emma, Olivia, Allison and Betsy Gregg all of Dodge City; great grandchildren, Charlieanne and Carter Huston of Aurora, Colorado; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Nebbling of Dodge City. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty; his parents; sister, JoAnn; daughter, Beth and son, Gil.
Private graveside service will take place. The family would like to request in lieu of flowers or memorial donations, to please take time to recognize a Veteran; do a kind deed, visit with or thank a Vet for their service to our country.
