Don grew up in Dighton and attended school there. He farmed his own ground until its sale in 1970, but continued to work for area farmers until 1976. He also pushed high moisture corn for DKS Dozing Service. Don worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Lane County Road Department for 30 years, retiring in 2007. In his spare time he enjoyed watching baseball, football and playing cards each evening with his wife. He spent much time in his shop repairing old things and making new. Don wasn’t afraid of hard work and enjoyed visiting with his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Christopher Lynn Shay, 1 brother, Edwin Shay and 1 sister, Helen Hemel.
