Dodge City women split Colorado trip

TRINIDAD, Colo. — The Dodge City Community College women’s basketball team spent this past weekend playing in the Trinidad State Junior College Classic in Trinidad, Colorado. The Conqs defeated the host Trojans on Friday evening before falling to Otero on Saturday afternoon.

Dodge City trailed 51-46 going into the fourth quarter on Friday evening against TSJC, but a 27-point quarter helped spark the Conqs to a 73-62 win for their fifth of the season. The Conqs had three players score in double figures, led by freshman Sydney Thurwalker’s 16 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt-freshman Alana Busby-Dunphy had a career-high 12 points off the bench and also added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore Ashia Pool also scored in double figures with 11 points for the Conqs. Dodge City shot 45 percent from the field and were able to score 23 points off of Trojan turnovers.

The Conqs entered day two feeling pretty good after getting a win on Friday, but a sluggish start would slowly doom them in a 82-59 loss to Otero. Dodge City knew they would have to guard the three-point line better on Saturday than they did on Friday against a Rattler team that shoots the ball well from long distance, but Otero would hit 13 three-pointers in the contest. Dodge City shot just 29 percent from the field and would be led by freshman Eisha Thomas’ career-high 20 points off the bench. Sophomore Ashia Pool was the only other player to score in double figures with 10 points.

Dodge City is now 5-2 on the season and will host Independence (3-4) on Wednesday evening in the Jayhawk Conference opener at 5:30 p.m.
