Dodge City Girls Upset No 6 Garden City in Sub-State Semi-Finals-Audio
Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – A poor shooting night along with a free throw drought and the intense rival match-up for the third time on the season proved to be too much for the No 6 Garden City Lady Buffs, as they lost to the Lady Red Demons 37-36 at the Garden in the Semi-Finals of Sub-State. It started out much the same way as a lot of games on the seasons for Garden City girls, slow and not scoring a whole lot of points early, matter of fact the Lady Red Demons took a 4-0 advantage before Garden City knocked anything down. It was early in the 2nd quarter when the Lady Buffs took the first lead on the night at 8-7 and expanded that to 10 at one point and took an 8 point lead at 19-11 into the locker room at intermission.
In the 2nd half the Lady Buffs brought their pressure defense created a lot of Dodge City turnovers and converted them into to points and took a 12 point lead midway through the 3rd. The Lady Red Demons came to play with a lot of intensity and first year head Coach Kelley Snodgrass had some wrinkles on plays coming out of the time outs and scored on everyone. It was 29-23 Garden City going into the 4th quarter and the Lady Buffs were still struggling to knock down shots down and had not connected on a free throw yet, but down the stretch it was Dodge City that made the plays and the pressure continued to mount on Garden City and then the collapse with shots missing every trip and the Red Demons won it 37-36. Garden City was led in scoring by junior Taryn Tempel with 15 points, and senior Johna McClelland chipped in 8. The Lady Buffs only went 1 of 10 from the free throw ling the entire game.
