Dodge City Girls Roll to State with Big Win over Northwest

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The last two years the Dodge City High School (17-5) girls basketball had the daunting task of eliminating a team that would eventually win the state championship in Wichita South. This year the Lady Red Demons earned the number two seed and had the luxury of getting the sub-state final at home and against a team that came in with a below 500 record Wichita Northwest (10-12). 

 

Game Highlights

 

The stars were aligned for Dodge City to make their first state appearance since 2010.  The Lady Demons started out well jumping out to a 16-10 lead in the first quarter and allowed only 2 points in the second to soundly beat Northwest 54-33. 

Jessie Harshberger continued to display the leadership qualities that will likely make her a repeat winner of the WAC player of the year award.  Harshberger finished with a double-double13 points and 10 rebounds. Tia Bradshaw added 13 and senior Bailey Shelor 10 for the win.  The Demons also shared the ball combining for 16 assists falling two short of their 18 assist mark in Wednesday night’s win over Campus.

The Demons rebounded from a tough third quarter where they were outscored 7-6 to end with a 21-14 run in the fourth.  A game after Dodge forced 29 turnovers of Haysville Campus they forced 26 turnovers of Northwest and limited the Grizzlies to 29 percent shooting from the field. Madison Surmeier was the only Northwest player to reach double figures.  She ended up scoring 13.

With the win Coach Kelley Snodgrass in her fourth year is the fastest to reach 50 wins as the Lady Demons head coach.  Dodge City will enter state on a nine game winning streak.  Their first game will be Wednesday in the state quarterfinals.  The opponent and time are still to be determined.
