District clinched; Scott City blows out Goodland
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It didn’t take long for Scott City to put the game in doubt on Friday night. Goodland entered Scott City on a two-game win streak, but with a depleted lineup due to several players out with a suspension of team rules. The Beavers scored on their first four possessions, on their way to a 56-0 win over the Cowboys at Darner Field.
Scott City scored on just their second play from scrimmage. With 8:29 remaining in the first quarter, Jarret Jurgens was wide open on a pass play from Bo Hess from 63 yards out to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead after the Gustavo Gonzalez PAT. The Beavers scored next with 5:39 left in the first frame on a 13-yard swing pass from Hess to Wyatt Hayes, as Gonzalez’ extra point made it 14-0. Following a Cowboy fumble, Kevin Aguilera scored from eight yards out with 5:18 left in the first quarter to push the lead to 21-0. Aguilera scored one more time, this time from 18 yards out with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter to push the lead to 28-0, after the Gonzalez extra point.
The Beavers scored once in the second quarter. With 7:07 remaining before halftime, Jurgens punched it in from two yards out, giving them a 35-0 halftime lead.
Goodland (3-5, 1-3 GWAC, 1-1 Dist. 7) recovered an onside kick to begin the second half, but would fumble on fourth down from the Scott City 48. On that fourth down play, a Cowboy fumble would be recovered by Wyatt Hayes, who returned it 53 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 42-0 with 9:47 remaining in the third frame. The Beavers scored late in the third quarter, as Jurgens rushed it in for an 8-yard touchdown that forced a running clock for the remainder of the game. Gonzalez’ extra point pushed the score to 49-0 Scott City.
In the fourth quarter, the Beavers played mainly their second team. At the 3:20 mark of the fourth quarter, Reid Brunswig carried it in from a yard out, and Sterling Wright kicked in the extra point to finish off the scoring for Scott City (6-2, 4-1, 2-0) at 56-0.
Both teams combined for seven turnovers, as Goodland had five and Scott City had two.
Bo Hess was 7-11 for 142 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. Jarret Jurgens had a catch for 63 yards, and Justin Faurot had three catches for 55 yards. Kevin Aguilera had six rushes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. The Beavers had 457 yards of offense, with 315 on the ground.
Goodland’s Dawson Raymer was 4-8 for 69 yards and two interceptions in his first start under center this year. Lucas Wood had a 42-yard reception on one catch, and DAwson Ensign had 65 yards on 14 carries. The Cowboys finished with 162 yards.
With the win, Scott City has now won 13 straight over the Cowboys since 2006. With their win followed by the Colby win over Concordia, the Beavers have clinched their eighth consecutive district title, and 11th straight playoff berth. The Eagles held off the Panthers 28-27 in the other 4A, Division II, District 7 game. Scott City will host their first playoff game on Friday, November 4, either against Hugoton or Holcomb. Holcomb saw a 16-game winning streak snapped at Pratt 35-28, while Hugoton took care of Kingman 42-17.
Scott City hosts 1-7 Concordia next Friday night, while Goodland hosts Colby for the right to claim the second playoff spot in District 7. The winner will play at Pratt in the first round of the playoffs Friday, November 4.
