Demons Win Third Straight; Set Up WAC Title Showdown
Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) There were two reasons the Dodge City Football Team needed a win over Hays Friday night at Memorial Stadium. First a win would extend the Red Demons winning streak to three and keep the momentum going into next week’s district game with top ranked Wichita Northwest. The other was to set a winner take all WAC championship Hatchet game with Garden City on October 30th. Mission accomplished.
Game Highlights
Caden Walters hooked up with Eric Reed on touchdown receptions of 71, 61 and 52 yards all in the first eleven minutes. Three touches, three touchdowns for Reed. Tyler Trent did the rest rushing for 148 and 2 touchdowns of 7 and 1 yard to seal up a 37-3 win. Walters went 13-24 for 328 yards and 3 touchdowns a full year after setting the school record with 453 passing yards against Hays in a 64-50 loss last year. For Hays it was their first loss to the Red Demons since 2011.
The defense continued to play well allowing on a third quarter field goal of 32 yards by Logan Clark. Dodge City held Hays offense to 4 of 15 in third down conversions. The Indians offense was limited to 49 carries for 167 yards and went 1 of 7 passing for 18 yards. Demon linebacker Zack Rodriguez intercepted Hays Kholton Meyers in the first quarter for His first interception of the year.
The second half was a little sloppy for Dodge City’s offense coughing the ball up three times resulting in four turnovers. The only points in the second half came from a safety off a bad pitch from Meyers to his running back in the end zone.
Dodge City (4-2, 3-0 WAC) has three games remaining in the regular season and will end their home schedule with Wichita Northwest next week. The Red Demons are hoping to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Hays falls to (2-4, 1-3 WAC) and will play for the right to reach the Kansas 4A playoffs.
