Dean Robert Young, 90, passed away February 12, 2017 at the Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. A 4TH generation native of Dodge City, he was born April 16, 1926 to Maurice R. Young and Ruth Winifred Davis. He was later adopted by Margaret States Young. 

After graduating with the class of 1944, he joined the Navy and was stationed on a 1944 destroyer in the south pacific. Two years later he stood on the deck of his ship with all his shipmates as General McArthur and other American and Japanese officials met on the deck of the USS Missouri to sign surrender agreements, formally ending World War II.

After his education at the University of Kansas he became a Bank Examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City serving a seven state area. There he met Doris and they were married June 1, 1953. Moving to Dodge City in December of that year Dean worked up through all the offices at the First National Bank becoming President and Chairman of the Board. 

Always a contributing member of the community, he served many different groups including First Presbyterian Church as Treasurer for eight years, on the Board of Directors of St. Mary of The Plains College, Rotary International, Girl Scouts of America and President of the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce. 

In 1961 he graduated from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. When he completed fifty years of banking he was honored by the Kansas Bankers Association. He and Doris were able to travel in the United States, Mexico, and foreign countries. The high light was their six month trip to Europe, Asia and Africa in a Volkswagon camp mobile. 

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Timothy Robert Harper., cousin Donald P. Young Jr., and two nephews John P. Young and David Young. 

He leaves his wife of sixty three years Doris; daughter Diane Margaret Summers and husband Leonard of Warsaw, Missouri; two brothers Philip M. Young of Phoenix, Arizona; Charles M. Young of Long Island, New York; cousin Fredric R. Young and wife Alberta of Dodge City; three grandchildren Nicole Smith and husband Cote of Lawrence, Kansas; Michelle Durham and husband Scott of Eudora, Kansas and Tyler Summers of Warsaw, Missouri and a great Granddaughter Lauren Preston of Eudora, Kansas; niece Salli Marinov and Grand Niece Marissa Marinov of Phoenix, Arizona. 

Funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday February 17, 2017 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family receiving friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church in care of the funeral home.
