Dart and Vargas land on 6A all-state softball team
Garden City, KS-One of the most successful seasons in school history produced more positive results on Wednesday.
Garden City High school pitcher Abbie Dart was named a first-team all-state player while infielder Yazmin Vargas landed on the second team.
“It’s a great feeling to know that others recognize my hard work,” Dart said. “It’s an awesome feeling.”
Dart will go down as one of the best hurlers in program history. She hit 600 career strikeouts in the third-place game vs. defending state champion Olathe South. For her senior season, Dart finished 12-3 in the circle with 163 strikeouts, which included a school-record 20 k’s on opening day vs. Thomas More Prep. She also led the team with four home runs and was second in RBI with 35.
While Dart was the team’s steady force in the circle, Vargas capped off one of the most impressive freshman campaigns in school history. She finished tied for the team lead in hits (39) and runs scored (44). She closed the season on a five-game hitting streak while hitting safely in all but two games in 2017.
“There was a lot of hard work behind it,” Vargas said. “I love softball, and we had an outstanding season.”
