Cowboys take two from Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In Tuesday’s doubleheader loss to TMP, Scott City was battling not only a perennial power, but also a 40-mph wind. Thursday was similar against the Goodland Cowboys, as a bitter northwest wind at 30 mph blew all afternoon and evening. Both games would also leave the Beavers feeling chilled by the Cowboys, as they fell 10-3 and 11-5.

Goodland 10, Scott City 3, Game 1
Both teams came in playing their second doubleheader of the week. Goodland swept Wray, CO with ease on Monday, while Scott City struggled with TMP on Tuesday. The Cowboys started off the first game by getting their first four batters on base, and scored three runs. They opened up the game with a five-run third inning when they batted around to make it 8-0. Scott City got on the board in the bottom of the third on a Kyle Cure hit that scored Justin Faurot to make it 8-1. Both teams scored one run in the fifth and seventh innings. Luke Avila picked up the win, going five innings, allowing two runs on three hits, and collected seven strikeouts. He also helped out his cause at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Kelby Smith drove in two runs on two hits. Gustavo Gonzalez took the loss, as he also went five innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits with a strikeout. Justin Faurot had two hits and two runs scored.

Goodland 11, Scott City 5 Game 2
The start of the evening finale had a similar start as the first game. Goodland got started by scoring the first two runs of the game, and led 2-0 after the first innings. They doubled their lead in the third inning, taking advantage of Scott City errors in both innings. The Beavers pulled to within 4-1 in the third inning, when Justin Faurot scored on a Cowboy error. Goodland would tack on a run in the fourth, score twice in the six, and put the game away for good with four runs in the seventh to lead by a score of 11-1. Scott City tried to make a monumental comeback in the bottom of the inning by scoring four runs, but would fall short. Nolan Deeds went five innings on the mound to pick up the win, giving up a run on two hits and struck out four. Luke Avila had three hits and drove in two runs in game two. Aaron Hoopes had a much better outing than on Tuesday. He went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, with six strikeouts. Gustavo Gonzalez and Hoopes ended with two hits in game two. The Beavers hurt themselves with six errors.

Scott City dropped to 0-4 overall, 0-2 in the GWAC, and will play their next eight games on the road, beginning on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Lakin. Goodland is 4-0 overall, 2-0 in league play, and will be at Burlington on Saturday.
