Both of the Dodge City Community College basketball teams picked up wins on the road in Colby on Saturday, as the women won 68-52 and the men won 88-73.

The Conquistador women ran into some early foul trouble, as their top two scorers on the year, sophomores Shorna Preston and Layla-J Cameron sat during the second quarter with two fouls. The Trojans managed to go up by as many as 13.

The Conquistadors got some important contributions off of the bench, especially from sophomore Morgan Ruff, who scored a career-high 10 points in the first half. Ruff did not play in the second half, but her play helped the Conquistadors survive a second quarter without their two leading scorers only down by four at halftime.

In the second half, Shorna Preston scored 18 of her 20 points and the Conquistadors rolled to the victory, keeping their position at the top of the KJCCC.

The men’s team led wire-to-wire against Colby, nabbing the 88-73 win. Freshman guards Mynor Strong and Derrick Rivers put up 30 and 20-point performances respectively on the way to the win.

Strong’s day included going 5-of-11 from three-point range, seven-of-eight from the free throw line, seven rebounds and a highlight windmill slam.

Keshawn Brown Jr also contributed 15 points off the bench. The conquistadors got numerous offensive contributions, but their defense held Colby’s leading scorer on the year, Eternity Eguagie to just eight points.

A big week awaits the Conquistadors as they play Independence on Wednesday and Coffeyville on Saturday. The men are currently tied in ninth place in the KJCCC standings with Independence, and the women lost one of their two KJCCC games to Coffeyville.
