Chanute, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Disappointment usually breeds success. Through 11 games, Dodge City is living proof.

Ameer Jackson scored a game-high 23 points and the Conquistadors won for the 10th time in their first 11 games, holding off Neosho County 92-87 Tuesday night.

“It was a hard fought win,” Head Coach Kyle Campbell said afterwards. “Couldn’t really get into any rhythm in the game.”

How could you? There were 91 combined free throws.

“There were just so many fouls called; so many free throws shot,” Campbell said. “Just hard to really do anything.”

Last year’s 14-win campaign seems like a distant memory. It’s taken this Conquistador squad less than a month to nearly equal that victory total.

Shootout wins aren’t something Mark James is accustomed to. But his team seems to thrive in them.

Kelli Tolar dropped a game-high 34 points and the Conquistadors withstood a blitz from the Panthers in a nine-point road win.

“I’m not happy with our defensive performance,” James said after the game. “I really wasn’t happy with the first-half effort at all. But we came out and took care of business after half time.”

Dodge City (8-1) had plenty of double-figure scoring; Azare Nave netted 27 and Keiwanna Patterson 13.
