Conqs offense struggles again
DODGE CITY — The Dodge City Community College Conquistadors dropped their second straight game on Saturday afternoon with a 45-7 loss to No. 4 Hutchinson at Memorial Stadium.
The Conqs have now been outscored 103-14 in their last two games and have had problems getting anything going offensively or defensively.
The Blue Dragons got on the scoreboard first with an 81-yard touchdown run from Dezmon Jackson after the Conqs thought they had brought him down. Jackson raced to the end zone to give Hutchinson a 7-0 lead early. Dodge City running back Justin Theriot took a carry right up the middle and was met by Blue Dragon linebacker Monty Montgomery. Montgomery took the ball right out of Theriot’s hands and took it in 20 yards for the Hutch score and adding onto their lead to make it 14-0 with 4:25 to go in the first quarter.
There was only one score in the second quarter and that was from another Jackson run. This one from 24 yards out giving the Blue Dragons a 21-0 lead going into halftime.
Hutchinson scored on their opening drive of the second half on a 23-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to four scores with 10:45 to go in the third quarter. Dodge City’s Drew Harris threw a pick-6 on the ensuing possession to give the Blue Dragons back-to-back touchdowns in less than 30 seconds off the game clock. Dodge City’s offense finally was able to get something going late in the third quarter on a 61-yard touchdown run right up the gut from Anthony Watkins to give the Conqs their first and only score of the afternoon with 2:31 to go in the third quarter.
The Blue Dragons scored twice in the final quarter to finish off the Dodge City Conqs. Once again the Conqs offense was limited, as they had just 251 yards of total offense on 58 plays. Dodge City will once again play a ranked opponent on Saturday when they travel to Highland. The Scotties will be coming into the game after a loss, as well.
