Cold weather halts Scott City baseball in doubleheader loss

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City’s senior day on Friday was one that was a cold and windy one, and concluded with rain. In the end, it was Colby who took advantage of Scott City errors in a 6-3 game one and a 7-1 Eagle win in the second game that was called after five complete innings due to rain.

Colby has won on small ball all year, and Friday was no exception. The Eagles would score first in the first inning on an RBI single by Brooks Curry, scoring Rex Branum to give them the early 1-0 lead. Scott City answered in the second inning, when Kyle Cure walked with the bases loaded that scored Drew Duff from third to tie the game at one. Colby responded in the third inning on a Gage Winger RBI groundout that plated JT Zerr to give the Eagles the 2-1 lead. The Beavers took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning, as Chase Rumford drove in Kevin Herrman, the courtesy runner for Todd Morris, and Cure would score on an Eagle error to go up 3-2. That lead lasted a half an inning, as Colby tied the game in the fifth , and took the lead on a Zach Hart RBI groundout in the sixth inning and would take advantage of two Scott City errors in the seventh to go up 6-3. The Beavers had one hit in their last at bat, and stranded the runner at second to end game. Parker Wright got the win for Colby, going all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits with five striekouts. Rex Branun had two hits in the game and drove in two runs. Gustavo Gonzalez went 4 2/3 innings, and was pulled right at 75 pitches. He struck out three runs on two hits and had four strikeouts. Justin Faurot went the final 2 1/3 innings and suffered the loss, allowing three runs on two hits. Scott City outhit the Eagles 5-4, but committed five errors to Colby’s four. Colby 7, Scott City 1, Game 2 (5 innings)
Rain would end this game prematurely. As Colby was headed to bat in the sixth inning, rain intensified, and it was the decision to call the game. A full game is considered five innings. Errors would doom the Beavers from the onset, as two first inning errors allowed Colby to score three runs in the first inning on three hits. The Eagles would add a run in the third and plated three additional runs in the fifth inning, with the aid of a Scott City error. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Beaver bats would come to lift, after being hitless in the first four innings. A Seth Cardenas double started the inning, followed by a Drew Duff double that scored Cardenas. That would be the only damage done by Scott City, as the game was called after five innings. Zach Hart struck out six and scattered three hits in five innings of work to pick up the win. Rex Branum had three hits and Hart Drove in two runs with two hits in the second game. Kevin Herrman took the loss, going four innings, giving up four runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Alex Depperschmidt gave up three runs in the fifth, all coming with two outs. Colby outhits Scott City 9-3, and the Beavers committed three errors.

Colby is now 9-1 overall and 8-0 in GWAC play, as they head to Holcomb to face the Longhorns on Tuesday, in a doubleheader that has league title implications. Scott City drops to 3-9 overall, 0-4 in league play, and will be at Ulysses on Tuesday.
