Colby wins two in Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City would play host to Colby 48 hours later than originally scheduled, due to the weather, and on Thursday night, it would be the visitors who would come out with a pair of big wins. The Lady Eagles would pull away for the 53-31 win, while the Eagle boys used hot shooting for a 66-40 victory.

Despite being shorthanded, Scott City would hang with Colby for two and a half quarters. The opening eight minutes would see six lead changes and two ties, and would be tied at 12, before the Lady Eagles began to add to their lead. They would use an 11-2 run in the middle of the second quarter, than would push their lead to 25-16, and eventually lead 27-19 at the break. The Lady Beavers chipped away at the deficit, getting to within 31-24 with 5:19 left in the third quarter, before a Colby run of 14-4 over the final 4:52 of the third quarter put them up 45-28. In the final period, the scoring would slow down, as the Eagles would outscore Scott City 8-3 and pick up a 53-31 win.

Colby was led by Brooklyn Jones with 24 points, while Emma Curry had 11 and McKenzie Dodson added 10. The Lady Eagles went 3-6 from the line and had nine turnovers. Scott City saw Brooke Strine and Erika Felker each score 10 points, as they were 4-6 at the free throw line and had 13 turnovers. Both teams had 25 rebounds.

With the win, Colby has won back to back times in Scott City, and it’s the first time they’ve swept the season series since 2015. The Lady Eagles lead the series since 1980 55-17. It was the fewest points scored by Scott City since their 52-30 loss to Cimarron January 29.

By looking at the game, you wouldn’t have believed that Colby was on a seven-game losing streak. They would take out their frustrations early and often on the Beavers. The Eagles used hot shooting to take an 18-10 lead after the first quarter, and grew their lead to 34-21 at the break. Scott City would open up with the first four points of the second half to get to within 34-25, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the night. A 17-4 run over the final seven minutes of the third quarter saw Colby build their lead to 51-29 after three quarters. The Beavers would score the first five points of the fourth frame, only to see the Eagles score the next eight to lead 59-34 with 4:13 remaining, as Colby would close the game with five straight to pick up a 66-40 win, which was their season high of points.

Ryan Myers led the way with 22 points, while Hunter Vaughn added 12 and Jaren Rush finished with 11. The Eagles were 8-12 from the foul line and had 10 turnovers. Scott City got seven points apiece from Blaine Culp and Lawson Bailey, as they had 14 turnovers and didn’t attempt a free throw. 

With the win Colby, has now won five straight, which is their longest in the series since 1996-99, and their margin of victory was their biggest over the Beavers since 2003. Colby leads the series 40-34 since 1980.
