Colby softball stuns Scott City

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–When Scott City and Colby played on April 27 in Scott City, it would be the Lady Eagles who committed many errors in both games played. The Lady Beavers would also hit the ball well, and take advantage of those errors in their wins of 12-3 and 11-4. Tueday’s regional semi-final felt like it saw the roles reversed. Colby would take advantage of errors, and hit the ball well, as they would stun Scott City 14-3 in six innings. It was Scott City’s first loss by run rule this year.

After a scoreless first inning, Colby put up four second inning runs. The first came of an RBI single by Chloe Imhoff to go up 1-0. Kennedy Stanley followed that up on the next pitch with a two-run single to push the lead to 3-0. Stanley scored on a fielder’s choice on the next play to make it 4-0. Gabby Miller would score in the third inning on Scott City’s third error of the inning to make it 5-0. After Bailey Latta led off the bottom of the third with a double, Lyndi Rumford would drive Latta home to make it 5-1. The Lady Eagles added a run in the fourth on a Paige Schroer single that scored Morgan Voss, and the Lady Beavers added a run in the fourth on an Aspyn Nix sacrifice fly that scored Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer. After Colby was held scoreless in the top of the fifth, Macie Price singled in Latta to pull Scott City to within 6-3. Unfortunately for the Lady Beavers, the Lady Eagles would score in the top of the six, and put the game away. An eight-run inning saw Colby score their first two runs on three hits and added a run to make it 9-3 on an error. With the score at 10-3 and two outs, Brielle Bange would clear the bases with a three-run double to make it 13-3, and Voss on the next at bat drove in Bange to make the score 14-3. Scott City had one more chance in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on, but a fielder’s choice groundout ended the game, and ended the season for the Lady Beavers.

Brielle Bange would have a four-RBI game, going 2-5 at the plate and scored two runs, while Kennedy Stanley drove in two runs and Morgan Voss had four hits and drove in a run for the Lady Eagles, who had 14 hits in the game. Freshman pitcher Kamrie Miller finished with nine striekouts over six innings of work, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits. Scott City’s Kaitlyn Roberts took the loss, surrendering 14 runs, only seven earned, on 14 hits and had two strikeouts. It was a two-hit game for Bailey Latta and Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer. The Lady Beavers had a season-high seven errors in the game.

The season ends for Scott City at 15-4. While it was a disappointing way to end the season, this season was a special one, as they won a league title for the first time, and the three seniors, Bailey Latta, Macie Price, and Kaitlyn Roberts, closed out their career for the Lady Beavers. Price was a member of the team for the last two years. Scott City just completed their third straight winning season, and have just four in program history. They are 46-18 over the past three seasons.

In the second semi-final game, TMP Marian slowly pulled away from Sublette/Satanta 10-0 in six innings, and the Lady Monarchs scored eight runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to knock off Colby 8-1 in the Regional Championship game. TMP Marian will play at the Class 3A State Tournament in Manhattan next Thursday, May 24.
