Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a tough night for Scott City’s boys and girls basketball teams Friday night, facing the Canyon Randall Raiders in the second night of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic. The Raiders, who have been in season since the middle of November, proved to be too much for the Beavers, as the Lady Raiders won 83-39, while the Raider boys prevailed 43-35.

Randall’s girls have had glimpses all season of scoring a high amount of points. Coming into Friday, the Lady Raiders had hit the 80-point mark twice. Their full court defense gave Scott City trouble early on, forcing 14 turnovers, and scored the first 12 points befoer the Lady Beavers got on the board. Randall (7-4) led 20-2 at one point, and led 20-6 after the first quarter. They would stretch their lead to 45-15 late in the first half, before leading 45-18 at the break. Scott City wouldn’t give up the fight, trying to take any momentum they could. The third period was played a little tighter, as the Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Beavers 14-10 to take a 59-28 lead going into the final quarter. In the final period, Randall caught fire again, as they scored at least 80 points for the third time this year. Scott City (0-2) had 14 first quarter turnovers, and ended up with 31 for the game. Ten Lady Raiders played, and all 10 scored. Leading the balanced attack was Olivia Williams with 15 points, as Kamry Perez, Kasmir Perez and Makayla Thomas each had 10 points. They shot 51% for the game and were 9-11 from the foul line. Scott City had Paige Winderlin, who was scoreless Thursday, lead them with 10 points. The Lady Beavers shot 35% for the game and were 10-23 from the charity line.

In the boys game, both teams struggled early on with shooting. Each team had one field goal in the first quarter. The differnce in the first quarter was that Randall hit one more free throw to lead 4-3 after the first quarter of play. After the Beavers took a 6-4 lead, the Raiders would use a couple runs to give them a lead they would extend. Their biggest run of the half was a 6-0 run that gave them a 17-9 lead with 31 seconds left before the break. Scott City (1-1) trailed 17-10 at the half, and eventually cut it to 21-17 with 5:21 remaining in the third quarter. That would be the closest the Beavers would get the rest of the way. Randall (3-6) scored five straight, and eventually extended their lead to 29-21 after three quarters. The end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter may have been the turning point of the game, as the Raiders scored five points in a 10-second span to give them a double digit lead nine seconds into the final quarter. Scott City battled back to 31-26 with 5:44 left, but Randall proved to have enough arsenal to prevent a comeback win for the Beavers. Savion Colbert and Sam Stormer led the Raiders with 10 points each, as they hit all four of their three-point makes in the second half. They shot 53% for the game, and were 5-8 from the foul line. Drake McRae led Scott City with 10 points on 5-8 shooting from the field. The Beavers shot 39% for the game, and were just 4-8 from the foul line.
