Busters signing day; five moving on
Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews)-There was no question that the 2013 Busters weren’t short on talent. That proved to be the case on Thursday.
A day late, but not a dollar short; Garden City Community Head Football Coach Matt Miller watched five of his players sign their letters of intent to play at four-year schools next year.
First there was Dondre Elvoid, who is heading to Texas State. The 6-4, Freshman from Pittsburgh, PA, anchored Jeff Kelly’s defensive line. Imagine what this kid could of have done if he played another year; he was not on the active roster in 2012.
One of the guys who didn’t surprise anyone was D’Vonta Derricott. The sophomore, who was considered by many as the top linebacker in junior college football, officially signed with Kansas State. Derricott says the main reason he chose the Wildcats over schools like Arkansas and Arizona State was the fact that they recruited him first. Coach Snyder just landed himself a sideline-to-sideline defensive player, with the speed of a wide receiver. Not bad for a team-considered to have one of the worst recruiting classes in the Big 12.
Derricott’s resurgence his sophomore year could be a direct correlation with the arrival of linebacker Errol Clarke. The sophomore, who inked with the University of Central Florida, is said to have some of the best instincts on that side of the ball that this coaching staff has ever seen. Clarke lead Garden City last season with 98 tackles.
Offensive lineman Ryan Johnson, who was an all-conference player at Ellsworth Community College before coming to Garden City, signed with UMASS. A staple at right tackle last season, the sophomore said he fell in love with the east coast.
Other signings on Thursday: DE Tysheen Bryant-Bethune Cookman
