Busters set to ring in 2013

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews)-Expectations can be a scary thing; after all-it’s what’s put on paper that can extinguish reality in a hurry.

The 2013 Busters open the regular season Saturday night at Buffalo Stadium in Garden City with the hope that the preseason hype stays true to form.

“Our talent is exceptional,” said freshman quarterback Akeem Jones, who will be making his first-career, college start in week one. “I’m not going to label us the best offense in the country because on paper, it doesn’t mean much.”

This much we do know, Head Coach Matt Miller and his staff, have surrounded Jones with plenty of offensive talent. And they’re facing an Independence squad that was one of the worst defenses in the country last season. But don’t be fooled, the guy on the other sideline Steve Carson is well respected.

“They’re going to have a chip on their shoulder,” Miller said. “They (coaches) picked them last in the conference, so don’t think that won’t give them extra motivation tonight.”

Proof: Last year the Pirates amassed nearly 400 yards of total offense against the Buster defense. A major reason for that: Freshman quarterback Kaylon Cooper, who tossed four touchdown passes to go along with 176 yards on the ground.

The good news is Cooper’s gone now; replaced with 6’3 Freshman Brian Morgan. But don’t think inexperience will hold the rookie back-intellect may prove to be the great equalizer on Saturday-Morgan might want to carry that high SAT score into the Pirate huddle.  And it will help to have All-Conference, 2nd-team tight-end Sean McKissack back on the perimeter.

Notes

Busters Lead the all-time series 47-20-1 including last year’s 56-49 shootout victory at Emmots Field.
