Busters focused on task at hand

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Armed with a top-20, national ranking, there’s a lot of expectations for the Busters in 2013. A good returning nucleus has definitely added to the hype.

“Having returners like Tyreek Hill, Dontavious Blair and D’Vonta Derricott has gotten us noticed,” Head Coach Matt Miller said. “We’ve got to take it one game at a time. All we care about is where we end up at the end of the season.”

College football always has that residual effect: Your future is always based on your past. Miller isn’t buying it.

“It’s carry over from our win in the Mississippi Bowl over Copiah-Lincoln (Community College) last season,” he said. “They’re in the top ten, which obviously plays a part in our ranking.”

That and a solid recruiting class has definitely helped.

“They’re excited about a lot of the new guys we’ve got coming in,” Miller said. “But it means nothing right now.”

And he’s right. We’ve seen top-five teams fizzle into obscurity before the halfway mark in seasons past, and JUCO ball is always a crap shoot because of turnover.

But this Buster bunch could be one of the most talented teams we’ve seen in a while-especially with their out-of-state recruiting class. Names like Monterio Burchfield from Huntsville, AL and Akeem Jones and Brandon Snell from Carol City High School in Miami definitely jump off the page. Sprinkle in lock down corner Tim Hill from Buford, GA, who coach Miller believes will have his choice of Division I schools after this season, it’s an impressive group.

On paper: Garden City is dynamite. On the field: stay tuned…
