Busters close in on .500; rout Bethany’s JV

Dodge City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Beat the teams that are on your schedule; period. That’s exactly what Garden City Community College did on Saturday afternoon.
Zantaya Davis notched a double-double-17 points and 11 rebounds as the Lady Busters ran past Bethany’s JV squad 87-39 at the United Wireless Arena.
“I always say it; our girls are extremely athletic,” first-year Head Coach Nick Salazar said after the game. “It really comes down to us making shots, and we have players that can definitely put the ball in the hole.”
There’s no doubt about that. Garden City shot a season best 55 percent from the floor and dished out 23 assists on 39 made field goals.
Four different Busters scored in double figures including Sandra Davis, the recent University of Houston commit. The sophomore finished with 10 points and six boards.
Another eye-opening stat: Turnovers. Garden City (3-4), who had a season-high 58 turnovers two weeks ago at Lamar, gave it away only 13 times in this one (seven of those coming in the second half).
The Lady Swedes were outmatched from the start, and were staring at a 22-point deficit going into the locker room. But that wasn’t enough for Salazar.
“We challenged our girls,” Salazar said. “Our goal was to hold them under 40 points. If we didn’t, there would be some major penalties in practice.”
His team followed their leader, holding Bethany scoreless for the first 8:08 of the second half. In fact the Busters limited the Swedes to only 13 points after half time.
