Buster men rout On Point Academy

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Garden City was looking to improve upon their first win of the year on Monday night inside the Consestoga Arena. While it wasn’t guaranteed that the Busters were going to have the opportunity to play everyone several minutes against On Point Academy. And that they did. Garden City used a couple big runs in the first half to distance themselves from the Panthers, and coasted to a 99-51 win to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Early on there were three lead changes and two ties. After On Point Academy led 7-4 with 16:52 left in the first half, it was all Garden City. The Busters went on a 20-0 run over the next four minutes to lead 24-7 with a little over 12 minutes left in the half. They would later on use a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 36-15 six minutes later. The Panthers scored seven of the half’s final nine points, as Garden City led 47-28 at the break.

In the second half, the Busters had two big runs. The first came over a four-minute span where they scored 13 straight to lead 67-32 with 13:24 left. And the second was a 20-4 run over five minutes to go up by their largest margin of 50 points at 97-47 with around two minutes remaining. They would also lead late 99-49, before settling for a 99-51 win.

Five Busters finished in double figures, led by Jakobi Pearson with 18 points off the bench, while Jamir Thomas had 16 points and seven rebounds, and Jaleel Simmons, Traylynn Spencer and Russhard Cruikshank added 12 points. Garden City shot 55.4% for the game at 41-74 and had 20 assists. They also outrebounded On Point Acadamy 37-34.

Eli Durhman led the Panthers with 18 points. On Point Academy shot 29% for the game at 18-62, and were 10-13 at the foul line.

Garden City had 66 points in the paint.
