Buster men blow by Sterling JV

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It didn’t take long for Garden City to get the 2016 season off to a hot start. The Busters scored the first 11 points of the game in a two-minute, 45-second span, and blew out the Sterling JV College Warriors 112-63 Tuesday night at the Perryman Athletic Complex to start off their first of four games in a five-day span. 

Garden City would build a 27-7 lead, only to see the Warriors battle back. Sterling JV would pull to within 34-28 with 5:07 left before halftime. However, that’s as close as the visitors would get. The Busters went closed out the final 1:24 of the half with six straight and led 50-38 at the break. 

In the second half, the Warriors would wear down. Garden City (1-0) scored the first six points of the half, and used runs of nine and 21 points to blow the game open. In that 21-0 run, the Busters held Sterling’s JV without a bucket for just over six minutes. In the end, the game ended on a 30-3 run over the final 8:17, en route to Garden City’s first win of the year. 

Five Busters hit double figures, led by newcomer Naradain James’ 16 points, Anei Anei with 15, While Victor Dukes and Troy Stancil added 14, and Josh Fleming pitched in 11. Garden City shot 53.8% (35-65) for the game, and out-rebounded Sterling JV 50-25. 

Sterling JV had four players in double figures, led by Tyron Mitts with 16, all coming in the first half. They shot 43.1% (25-58) for the game, and hit 11 three-point baskets, with only three coming in the second half. 

Garden City will remain at home on Wednesday, with an 8 pm matchup against Sunrise Christian. Sunrise Christian knocked of Seward County 95-90 in double overtime Tuesday night in Liberal.
