Buster Basketball Teams Go 3-1 in Thanksgiving Classic-Audio

Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – The Garden City Community College Buster Basketball teams brought in some quality teams for their 2012 Thanksgiving Classic, that provided some great basketball over the two days following the holiday. There were three different states represented on Friday and Saturday with ranked teams including, the #12 Lady Busters, #14 New Mexico Junior College women, both men and women’s teams from Trinidad State Colorado, along with the D-II #8 Highland men, Colby and Seward County all from the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

The #12 Lady Busters opened the classic with an 80-60 win over #14 New Mexico on Friday, receiving a stellar double-double performance by NJCAA player of the week, sophomore Tamara Jones throwing down a career high 36 points and 11 rebounds. Jones got a lot of help with 8 other Lady Busters in the scoring column, including Shicole Watts with 12 points, 8 from Deni Jacobs and another 7 points and 10 rebounds form Tahlia Pope. The Garden City men an equally tough assignment facing the D-II #8 Highland Scotties from the Jayhawk East Conference. This game had of ups and downs with the scored tied 6 times and three lead changes and Highland had the advantage at the break 24-21. There was not much scoring in that first 20 minutes, as both teams shot poorly with the Busters on shooting 21.9% to the Scotties 32.1%. The Busters came back in the 2nd half playing better defense and shooting the ball a little better and did out score the Scotties 51-48 to tie the game in regulation at 72. For the first time on the season the Busters had to go to overtime to get the win out scoring Highland 11-6 in the extra period to win a hard fought battle 83-78, pushing their record to 6-2. Three Busters led the scoring with Chris Hall having his best game to date firing in 29 for a career best and sophomore point guard Frank Ahgholor scored 24 2nd half points to help lead the Buster men to their 6th victory on the season.
