Building a winner; Buffs wrestlers finish 19th in Kansas City
Kansas City, MO-As people have come to expect over the last couple of years, Garden City’s brutal schedule has led to a strong March. Head Coach Carlos Prieto is banking on that trend to continue.
In a two-day stretch that saw some of the best talent in the region, the Buffaloes finished 19th out of 40 teams at the 2014 Kansas City Stampede.
“This was a really good test for our guys,” Prieto said afterwards. “This tournament definitely exposed some weaknesses.”
Which is what the veteran head coach was hoping for, because come March, those weaknesses should all but be patched up.
Tevin Briscoe at 145 and Michael Prieto at 126 paced the Buffaloes with fifth and sixth place finishes respectively. But it was a grueling 48 hours for them and the rest of the squad.
On Friday, the Buffaloes were just 25-23 in their 48 matches a far cry from their two-day demolition in Manhattan and Clay Center the week before. But the competition level was also that much higher.
Freshman Kaj Perez, who started the weekend slowly, finished strong at 106 lbs, winning each of his last four matches.
