Buffs volleyball wins fifth straight WAC crown

Great Bend, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-When the dust settled Saturday night, Garden City High School volleyball coach Abby Piha took a second to reflect.

Not only had her team captured their fifth straight Western Athletic Conference title, they had won their 13th straight match. It was a far cry from the Buffaloes early-season struggles a year ago.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Piha said afterwards. “These girls have definitely put the work in.”

That work led them to straight-set victories over Great Bend, Liberal, Dodge City and Hays to earn conference supremacy once again.

Senior Erika Schafer finished the four matches with 32 kills.

“One our biggest goals this season was to win WAC,” Schafer explained. “It was a complete team effort.”

Next up for the Buffaloes will the the 6A substate Saturday at Wichita West.
