Final Highlights:

Guymon, OK (westernkansasnews.com)-There’s something different about the Garden City boys these days: Their offense is producing when it counts. They’re not putting up eye-popping numbers, but compared to the first half of the season, it’s night and day.

Hunter Delgado poured in nine points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Buffs stormed to a 46-30 win over Guymon at Tigers Field House on Friday night.

“He (Hunter) won’t admit it but his football signing has taken a lot of pressure off of him,” Head Coach Jacy Holloway said after the game. “

Right from the get go, the senior, who earlier in the week inked his letter of intent to play at Hutchinson, took charge-slicing through two different defenders on his way to the rim to tie the game 2-2. And although it wasn’t the greatest offensive performance of the season, Delgado played under control and was an efficient 4-of-8 from the field-picking and choosing his spots.

Delgado got plenty of help in the early going-thanks to Mitchell Hernandez’s three-point assault. The senior knocked down consecutive trays to give Garden City (10-5, 2-2) an 8-2 advantage. Hernandez finished the night with eight points on 3-of-7 shooting.

But as has been the case all season long, the story for Holloway’s bunch was defense. Specifically Luis Rodriguez, who invited the Tigers to his own personal block party. The junior swatted five Guymon shots including two in the first 90 seconds of the game-helping the Buffs build a seven-point half-time lead.

That lead swelled to 10 in the final minutes of the third period when Tristan Nanninga robbed Anotnio Elizalde of the ball and coasted the other way for a transition layup. The senior finished with four points off the bench.

The defense suffocated Guymon (8-9) in the final period-allowing only four points and closing the game by scoring the final eight.

Caleb Tramp scored eight points; Rodriguez added five. Angel Vega was the game-high scorer for the Tigers-finishing with 11 points.

Final Highlights:

All records are meant to be broken. And although there weren’t any shattered in this game-Garden City senior guard Taryn Tempel set up a rather interesting scenario when the Buffs travel to Great Bend on Friday.

Tempel closed to within four points of passing Deana Craft for tops on Garden City’s all-time scoring list as the Buffs doubled up Guymon Friday night at Tiger’s Field House 72-36.

“I told her (Taryn) she was closing in on it,” Head Coach David Upton said. “But she doesn’t really pay attention to it. If you watch how she plays, it’s all about the team. She told me she would trade all those points (939) for a bunch of state championships in a heart beat.”

That dream of course is still alive-considering the Buffs (10-5) pulled to within a half-game of Maize (10-4) for second place in the sub-state region. Jumping over the Eagles would give Garden City home court throughout the playoffs.

“We have a pretty challenging schedule coming up,” Upton said. “Great Bend and then Holcomb; it doesn’t get much harder than that.”

With those games looming in the foreseeable future, Garden City made quick work of the over-matched Lady Tigers-forcing 13 first-quarter turnovers and racing out to a 17-2 lead.

They padded that lead to 27 at the half and held Guymon (6-11) to just 15 points in the final 16 minutes.

Jaymie Bernbeck led way for Garden City-scoring 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Jessica Carillo netted a season-high 14 while Jacksenie Tornero and Alexis Elliott chipped in seven a piece.

Denesse Longoria paced Guymon with seven points.
