Garden City, KS-After mother nature delayed the start of the Garden City High School softball season, the Buffaloes finally got things started on Thursday.

And the results were mixed.

Garden City lost game one to TMP-Marian 8-2 before taking the finale 7-3.

The Monarchs built a 3-0 edge in game one off of Garden City started Hailey Dart. Then, after the Buffaoes got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, TMP put the game away in the sixth.

The Monarchs plated five runs, two of which came on an error and a wild pitch.

“I thought Hailey pitched really well,” Garden City Coach Trina Moquett said. “She just didn’t get a lot of help behind her.”

The Buffaloes committed five errors in the six-run, opening-game loss.

They rebounded nicely in the finale.

Laura Farmer cranked a solo home run in the first to give the Buffaloes a 1-0 lead. Then, after falling behind 3-1, Garden City rallied back to tie it in the sixth on Reagan Nordby’s RBI double. She and Reigan Crawford scored the go-ahead runs on an error later in the inning, and the Buffaloes had the lead for good. Yazmin Vargas followed by putting a ball in play before clearing the bases with another TMP miscue in the outfield that made it 7-3.

“I like how we responded in that second game,” Moquett said.

Vargas struck out seven in seven innings in her first start of the year for Garden City. Dart fanned 11 in the opener, while allowing only one earned run.
