Buffs medal 7, Demons 3 in 6A State Tournament
Wichita, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Garden City had a big 2018 6A State Wrestling tournament with seven medalists. Dodge City would finish with three medalists.
Garden City had seven wrestlers medal. In the 126 weight class Jacob Holt lost 4-2 by sudden victory to Jace Koelzer of Olathe South. Koelzer is the reigning Fargo National Champion. Holt medals for the second straight year after taking first at 113 last year. He called the loss a learning experience.
“With this second place medal I’m definitely going to remember this one and it won’t go away easy, but I’m confident in next year and what it has to offer,” said Holt.
At 113 Silas Pineda took 3rd beat Couy Weil from Dodge City 8-0. In the 120 weight class Diago Hernandez finished 5th with a 4-2 win. At 132 Kaj Perez finished 4th as he fell 12-9. In 152 Trey Medina took 5th with a 13-6 decision. In 170 pounds Alex Rodriguez lost an ultimate tiebreaker 4-2 and finished 6th. In the 285 weight class Refugio Chairez scored three points in the final 35 seconds for a 4-3 win and th place medal.
Those seven medalists helped the Buffaloes finish 5th in the overall team standings. Garden City finished 3rd in 2017. Olathe North won the State Tournament.

Dodge City had three wrestlers medal on Saturday. In the 285 pound class Evan Darville finished in 2nd as he fell in the Championship 7-1. Darville was happy with his performance.
“I’m content with this year,” said Darville, “I definitely wanted first, but second is a big step from not placing last year.”
At 113 pounds Couy Weil took 4th after falling to Pineda from Garden City 8-0. Ansony Quezada got a 4th place medal at 195 pounds after getting pinned.
Dodge finished 11th in the overall team standings. The Red Demons finished 6th in 2017.
