Buffs Jump Out to Fast Start, Fade in Loss to Kapaun Mt. Carmel

Newton, KS (westernkansasnews.com) After giving up the first three points of the game, Garden City girls basketball team (5-8) rattled off seven in a row. The offense just could not consistantly poured in points and the Buffaloes suffered their third loss in a row at the Newton Invitational Tournament 43-31 to Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

Game Highlights

Garden held the lead for most of the first half until Ashley Lesser sparked an 11-0 run right before halftime with two threes and Kapaun Mt. Carmel led 26-18 at half. In the second half it was much the same. Garden City had only one free throw and did not score from the field until the 6:20 mark of the 4th quarter on Lexi Hogan’s three. Over the second and third quarters during a sixteeen minute stretch the Crusaders outscored the Buffaloes 26-5.

Brenna Monty ended the game with 12 points for Mt. Carmel on 5-19 shooting. Anna Roulston had 10 points and 14 rebounds to get a double-double. Josie Calzonetti scored seven points for the Buffaloes in the loss. Talent junior guard Abby Dart was plagued with foul trouble throughout the game and was limited to five points in 14 minutes.

Garden City will be back in WAC play Tuesday night when they travel to Dodge City. The Garden City broadcast can be heard on ESPN 99.9 and the Dodge City broadcast on Z98. Pre-game show will begin at 5:45 with the tip-off at 6pm.
