Buffs handle Red Demons in 80th Hatchet Game

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Garden City High School football beat Dodge City 40-9 Friday night behind a big second half performance.

The game was a defensive slugfest in the first half with the Buffs leading at halftime 6-3. The Red Demons led most of the first half until Quinton Lapointe scored a 3-yard rushing touchdown with 46 seconds left in the first half.

After missing a field goal on their first possession of the second half Garden City(6-1, 3-0) would score touchdowns on their next five possessions to seize control.

The Buffaloes were led by Quinton Lapointe, who ran for 198 yards and 4 touchdowns on 33 carries. Tye Davis had a big night catching 11 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. Davis also completed a pass for 41 yards. Garret Doll was 15-23 passing for 201 yards and a touchdown.  Garden City had 423 yards of total offense.

The Garden City defense held Dodge City(3-4, 1-2) to 254 yards of offense. Dawson Williams led the Red Demons with 63 yards on 7 carries and 3 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.  Beau Foster was 10-28 passing for 126 yards with a touchdown and interception.

The Buffs have now won the last two Hatchet Games. Dodge City still leads the all-time series 73-43-3 and 49-30-1 in Hatchet Games.

Garden City will play Great Bend(4-3, 1-2) at home next week to close out the regular season. Dodge City returns home for the regular season finale against Liberal(5-2, 1-2).
