Buffs golf eighth at state
Topeka, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-When the boys golf season started, Garden City coach Walker Frey expected his team to playing late into May. His vision became reality on Tuesday.
Though they didn’t win a state championship this season (eighth place at 6A state golf tournament)-the future definitely looks pretty bright.
“I hope this is something that becomes the norm around here,” Frey said. “It was definitely a good year.”
Things looked promising at the start when Garden City was just 10 over par collectively after the first five holes. But things changed from there.
“Overall, I had a few holes that cost me,” said senior Austin Swender, who shot a team-best 80. “It wasn’t the way i envisioned it but it ended up okay.”
Teammate Taylor Larsen finished with an 81 followed by Logan Durst’s 84; Connor Schultz -89; Tucker Schiffelbein-90 and Lucas Goss-106.
Shawnee Mission East won the team state title while Maize’s Kale Reynolds 70 was good for tops overall and the individual state championship.
