Buffalos and Demons split in Garden City

Garden City and Dodge City high school met on the hardwood for the first time this season on Tuesday night, with Garden City getting the win in the girl’s game, and Dodge City coming out on top in the boy’s game.
The Buffalos got out to a strong start in the first game, going up 36-8 at halftime. They were led in scoring by freshman guard Mia Hannagan, who scored 17 points on five made three-pointers. They also got 10 points and seven rebounds from junior forward KJ Pinchon.
The Buffalos moved to 8-6 with the 59-24 win.
The boy’s game was close throughout, with it being a game of runs. The first quarter ended on a buzzer-beater from senior guard Dallas Rosales, who made the 3 from 30-feet to put the Buffalos up 22-13.
Dodge City formed a decent response in the second quarter, bringing the Garden City lead down to 4 at halftime. Junior guard Ty Scheck had 11 points at halftime for Dodge City to go along with sophomore guard Elliott Williams’ nine on three made 3’s.
In the second half, Dodge City came out quickly to move into the lead after some big plays from freshman guard Isai Reyes. Reyes finished with a career-high 12 points.
Garden City went back to what was working to reclaim the lead however, as senior forward Thomas Longa was having his way in the paint. Longa finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds, with the rebounds being split between offensive and defensive boards.
The Demons got the lead back by continually forcing Garden City into turnovers in the fourth quarter, eventually building a lead that they could protect as Scheck hit some clutch free throws to move his total to 21 and give Dodge City the 66-61 win.
The Demons moved to 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play with the win and will take on Hays on Friday night.
Both Garden City teams will travel south the Woodward to take on the Boomers on Friday.
