Buffaloes Sweep Rival Red Demons on Diamond

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The resurgence of the Garden City High School Baseball team can be attributed to excelling in two areas. Good pitching and timely hitting.

Both were needed in beating rival Dodge City Friday at Clint Lightner Field 4-0 and 8-3. The wins improved the Buffaloes to 7-5, 3-1 in the WAC and gives them the opportunity to challenge Hays for the conference title.

Dodge winners in five of the last six games coming in fell to 5-5, 0-4 in conference.

Game One Highlights

In the first game, Garden City’s Colton Snodgrass allowed just two hits and retired the first eleven batters he faced. Alec Koehn had a fifth inning double and Bryce Unruh a leadoff single in the seventh.

Offensively Syrus Schwartz hit a solid smash single off the edge of Ty Wallace’s backhand attempt at first bringing in two. Garden added their final two runs on a throwing error from Kaden Riekenberg in the sixth.

Game Two Highlights

Game two saw the Red Demons score first on a RBI single by Alec Koehn. Garden answered back with a RBI double double in the third.

With the game tied at two in the fifth Garden City scored six times, pulling ahead on a run scoring single from Eden Arreola just ahead of Nick Laurels shocking three run homer down the line in right. Laurels was playing in just his second varsity game for the Buffaloes, but his hit came at the right time in the biggest rivalry game.

Eric Heimann picked up the win giving up three runs on five hits in six innings. Syrus Schwartz worked a spotless seventh to end the game. Reid picked his first loss in relief of Dayton McGroarty.

Garden is back in action Tuesday against Word of Life. Pre-game is at 245 on ESPN 99.9.
