Buffaloes Split Twin Bill With TMP-Hays to Collect First Win on the Season
Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – It was a stellar outing for senior pitcher Edgar Montoya in game one of the double header on Thursday at Clint Lightner Field in Garden City, as the Buffaloes collected their first win of the season 4-1 over TMP-Hays. Game one was a classic pitching duel for both teams in a close game all the way to the end, however Garden City came up with the runs at the right time in 5th and 6th innings to gain the advantage. It was a pair of walks by Isaiah Rodriguez and Ivan Guterriez with a past ball on the Monarch catcher and junior Mitch Hernandez getting on board that scored two runs for the Buffaloes in the bottom of the 5th giving them a 2-0 lead. Garden City would score two more runs in the bottom of the 6th, again with walks and a couple of hit batters issued by Monarch pitcher Shane Zimmerman, allowing the Buffaloes to take a 4-0 lead. TMP would pick-up one run in the top of the 7th off a double by Cameron Brin and Garden City would take the game 4-1 on four hits no errors and leaving 10 runners on base. The Monarch’s collected their one run on 6 hits, one error and left 8 base runners stranded. Edgar Montoya got his first win on the season going the full 7 innings giving up six hits, one run, he struck out six with only three walks.
The night-cap game was a wild extra inning affair with the Monarch’s coming from behind to win 8-7 in the bottom of the 10th innng. Garden City would take a 2-0 lead in the 2nd with Edgar Montoya getting on base on an error followed by three singles from Todd Savolt, Frank Rosas and Emillo Parr giving the Buffaloes their early two run advantage. TMP would pick-up one run in the 4th making it a one run game at 2-1. In the 5th the bats were hot for both teams, as the Monarch’s would score 3 runs from four hits with Zimmerman, Gottschalk and Werth all crossing the plate giving them a 4-2 lead, but Garden City would get hits from the top of their order with singles from Andy Saldivar and Daveon Acker followed by a double from Mitch Hernandez scoring two runs to tie the game at 4-4. In the top of the 6th Grant Romme would score for the Monarch’s to gain the advantage 5-4, but Garden City found some offense in the bottom of the inning with a double from Edgar Montoya and a single from Emillo Parr to tie the score at 5-5. It was not until the 9th inning that both teams would score again, as the Monarch’s would score two runs off of two hits with Wassinger ands Stults crossing the plate. The Buffaloes would get some walks and a double from Thomas Solario scoring a couple runs to tie the game again at 7-7, but the Monarch’s would get one run in the top of the 10th taking an 8-7 lead and hang for their first win of the season. The Monarch’s produced 14 hits and 6 errors in the game leaving 15 runners stranded, Garden City collected 12 hits, 5 errors and left 10 base runners. TMP is now 1-3 on the season, Garden City is 1-5 and travels to Wichita today to battle the North High Indians in a double header.
