After approval from the USD 457 Board of Education last night, Assistant CoachCarlos Prieto has been named the new Head Wrestling Coach for Garden City High School. Coach Monte Moser recently retired as the Buffalo grapplers mentor after five seasons. Garden City Athletic Director Martin Segovia had a pretty good idea who would be a great choice to take over the program, but the search did yield a number of quality candidates. Prieto was an assistant under Segovia when he was the Head Coach for Garden City from 2000-2007 and Prieto stayed as the assistant under Moser. A 1986 graduate of Scott City High School enjoying a successful prep career, he received his degree from Fort Hays State University. As a former Head Coach at Ulysses from 2001 to 2005, Prieto gained valuable experience with quality athletes coaching three State Champions and a number of State placers. The Garden City Buffaloes finished 8th in the 6A State Tournament this past season with one State Champion in A.J. Hurtado at 132 pounds, who will be back for his senior year in 2013, along with a very good team nucleus for next year. Coach Prieto has been an integral part of the recent success of the Buffaloes and will bring great energy and continuity to the program.
