Buffalo Tennis Team Wins Tough Tournament at Topeka
Facing a solid field of 12 teams at the Topeka Invitational on Monday, the Garden City High School boys Tennis team brought their “A” game and beat the always strong Eastern Kansas teams in their own backyard. The Buffaloes took the top hardware honors scoring 43 points, Topeka High was 2nd with 36 and Salina Central finished 3rd with 35. Garden City received first place finishes from the two doubles teams and #2 singles, as Sebastin Kyaw beat Rogers of Goddard 8-4, Gessler of Derby 8-2, Straub Salina Central 8-0, Haig Lawrence Free State 8-0, Lenz of Salina South 8-3 and finished with Burle of Maize 8-3. The #1 doubles team of Evan Riggs and Brian Clark nailed down some big wins and a great tie breaker victory over Topeka West 8-7 (7-3), and then beat Lawrence Free State 8-4, Salina Central 8-3. Maize 8-5, Salina South 8-0 and finished with a win over Topeka High 8-5. For the #2 doubles team of the brother duo in Denton and Brennen Keller, they handled the field very well beating Salina South 8-2, Topeka West 8-0, Lawrence Free State 8-4, Topeka High 8-6, Shawnee Heights 8-5 and Salina Central 8-4. It was a tough go for the Buffs #1 singles player Blake Stucky, as he finsihed 6th in a talented field. Blake went 3-3 in the tournament, beating McKenna of Salina Central 8-4, Zamechik of Salina South 8-6 and Lacy of Topeka West by default, but lost to Pierret Goddard 4-8, Bradshaw of Lawrence Free State 4-8, and Connor of Topeka High 4-8. Coach Rod Robinson was extremely pleased and proud of the way his team handled the long trip, tough competition, and going to the Eastern side of the state and beating some talented teams and individuals.
