Buffalo boys tie for 5th at State Track

Wichita, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Garden City boys track team had a good weekend at State Track, notching 35 points and earning a fifth place tie. The buffaloes tied with Topeka Washburn-Rural and were just two points behind Wichita South for fourth. Manhattan won the 6A boys championship with 76 points, Shawnee Mission-Northwest was second with 66 and Haysville-Campus was third with 41. Dodge City was tied for 30th with just one point.

On the girls side Garden City was 11th with 30.5 points and Dodge City was 21st with five points. Lawrence took the State Championship with 82 points.

The Garden City boys were lifted by the State Champion 4×800 meter relay team of Javyn Contreras, Ethan Fisher, Javier Cervantes and Kameron Wildeman notching an 8:03.31, winning by more than four seconds.

The Buffaloes were also propelled by second and third place finishes from Jaycob Vargas and Thomas Turpin in the pole vault. Both Vargas and Turpin were able to clear 14 feet.

Garret Doll had a big weekend for the Buffalo boys taking fourth in the 1600 meter run at 4:26.22 and fifth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.33.

Also scoring points for Garden City was Nathaniel Hubbard, who finished seventh in the 400 at 50.32. The 4×400 team of Jarrod Springston, Garret Doll, Kameron Wildeman and Nathaniel Hubbard finished eighth at 3:26.8

Dawson Williams scored the only point for Dodge City finishing eighth in 110 hurdles at 15.99. John Johnson was 13th in the high jump clearing 5’8.

For the Garden City girls Taylor Savolt led the way winning the State Championship in the 300m hurdles with a school record of 45.05. Savolt also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 17’8 and fifth in the triple jump at 38. She was also part of the 4×400 team that took fifth at 4:04.74 along with Megan Powers, Felicity Rodriguez and Raegan Linenberger.

Linenberger also took fourth in the high jump clearing 5’04. In the pole vault the Lady Buffaloes had two in the top eight, Annie Gerber took sixth at 10’6 and Saleen Wears was eighth clearing 9’6.

Ezinne Okoro was the top finisher for Dodge City taking sixth in the triple jump at 37’03.5. Sophomore Audrey Phelps placed for the second straight year finishing seventh in the 300m hurdles running 49.61. The Lady Demons 4×400 team of Okoro, Phelps, Sydney Foster and Ayanna Hensley finished ninth at 4:08.97 and the 4×800 team also finished ninth at 10:07.56.
